Designing a custom LED neon sign for your business is simpler than most people expect — but there are a few things worth knowing before you start, so you end up with a sign that truly represents your brand rather than one that needs adjusting later.
This is a practical guide to the design process, from concept to confirmed order.
QUICK ANSWER
The best starting point for designing a custom neon sign is your existing logo or brand assets. From there, size, colour, backing style and placement all shape the final design. At PreemNeon™, we handle the design work and create a free visual mockup before any production begins.
Start with your logo or brand assets
If your business already has a logo, that's the most natural starting point for a custom neon sign. A logo sign communicates brand identity clearly, works at scale and gives the finished sign a professional, considered quality.
If you're working with a wordmark, an icon or a combination of both, we can advise on which element works best at sign scale — or produce a version that combines them effectively.
What if you don't have a logo?
If you don't have a logo or are in the process of rebranding, you can still design a sign. A wordmark in a chosen font, a short phrase or a simple graphic can all work well.
When you submit your idea, tell us what the sign is for, what you want it to say and any style direction you have. We'll develop an initial visual from there.
Think about where the sign will live
The design of the sign should be informed by its location. A sign in a busy gym is doing different visual work than a sign in a quiet café or a reception area. The amount of detail, the size of the lettering and the colour choice all need to relate to the environment the sign will sit in.
Consider viewing distance, ambient lighting, wall colour and whether the sign is the main focal point of the space or a supporting element.
Backing style is part of the design
The backing isn't just a structural choice — it's a design choice. Clear acrylic disappears into the wall and puts all focus on the neon itself. A cut-to-shape backing follows the outline of the design. Mirror acrylic adds a premium, reflective quality. A printed backing board allows colour and additional graphic elements behind the neon.
Each option changes the look of the finished sign significantly. We'll show you how different backing options look as part of the mockup process.
Colours and font
If your brand has set colours, we'll work to match them as closely as possible. If you have flexibility on colour, we'll advise on what tends to work well at sign scale and in the lighting conditions of your specific space.
Font matters too. Some fonts that work well in print or digital formats don't translate well into neon because of fine detail or tight lettering. We'll flag this early if it's relevant to your design and suggest alternatives that maintain the spirit of your brand.
How the PreemNeon™ design process works
You send us your logo, artwork or idea. We review the design, advise on anything that needs adjustment for sign production, and create a free visual mockup showing exactly how the sign will look. You'll also receive a fixed quote at this stage — no surprises once production begins.
If you want changes to the mockup, we revise until you're happy. Production only starts once you've approved the design.
